Every Shade Carries a Rhythm
I walked the streets of Loiza, Puerto Rico in April 2025 and the history of the small town struck me in ways it hadn’t before.
The descendants of the West African slaves who have settled and made the town their home. Those who carry the traditions of their ancestors with them in this small Caribbean island, even today.
They blended their ways with the native Taino Indians and first the colonizers of Spain and then the United States, yet still make sure that their ancestral ways are not lost, but enriched.
Those thoughts, those memories came floating back as I worked this piece that carries with it the rhythm of La Bomba… the call and response dance created by the people of Loiza to keep the ancestral beat alive.
As I created her, one thought kept coming back to me:
Isn’t this also true of all of us?
We carry the genes, the blood, the roots of many people.
Each beautiful.
Each carrying our own culture, heritage and identity.
And when we come together?
Our beauty is unmatched.
Our power is unstoppable.
So, meet her:
Every Shade Carries the Rhythm
Inspired by the richness of color, culture and connection, she is a celebration of the beauty that happens when every shade has a place.
And apparently, she was ready to dance without me. 😂
She made her first appearance at Microsoft Atlanta last weekend while I was in New York for a family members memorial service.
Even an artist has to learn to let her babies leave the nest. ❤️
